Charmouth to Bridport Walk

8.3 miles (13.4 km)

This walk takes you from Charmouth to Bridport on the Dorset coast. The route runs for just over 8 miles, first following the coastal path east to the Golden Cap Estate, Seatown and West Bay.... Here you pick up another trail and follow it north along the River Brit into Bridport.
This varied route links the dramatic cliffs of the Jurassic Coast with the attractive River Brit valley, passing through some of the finest scenery in west Dorset. The coastal section includes towering sandstone and limestone cliffs, secluded coves and wide views across Lyme Bay, while the inland section follows the fertile river valley into the historic market town of Bridport.
The route passes through the Golden Cap Estate, where the surrounding hills are covered by species-rich grassland, ancient hedgerows and patches of woodland. Nearby Golden Cap rises to 191 metres, the highest point on England's south coast, with outstanding views extending along the Dorset and Devon coastline. Further east, West Bay is renowned for its picturesque harbour, distinctive golden cliffs and its role as a filming location for the television drama Broadchurch.
After leaving the coast, the route follows the River Brit through open meadows and farmland towards Bridport. The river supports kingfishers, grey wagtails and herons, while the surrounding valley has long been associated with rope and net making, industries that helped shape the town's history. Bridport itself is one of Dorset's most attractive market towns, with a vibrant street market, a wide selection of independent shops and cafés, and the Bridport Museum, which tells the story of the town's rich history and internationally important rope-making industry.
