Mortehoe to Ilfracombe Coastal Walk

5.2 miles (8.4 km)

The coastal walk from Mortehoe to Ilfracombe is a journey through some of North Devon's most secluded and rugged maritime scenery.
Starting from the elevated village of Mortehoe, the path quickly meets the clifftops of Morte Point, where the landscape is defined by jagged slate outcrops and expansive views toward Lundy Island.... As you progress eastward, the trail winds along steep, grassy slopes and narrow ridges that overlook hidden rocky coves and crashing surf.
The path eventually descends into the tranquil wooded valley of Lee Bay, often referred to as the Fuchsia Valley due to its lush vegetation. This sheltered cove provides a brief change of pace with its calm shingle beach and thatched cottages, offering a quiet pause before the trail climbs back up onto the cliffs. The ascent out of Lee leads you onto a series of dramatic headlands, including Bull Point with its prominent lighthouse that has guided ships through these treacherous waters for generations.
Continuing toward Ilfracombe, the terrain becomes a sequence of undulating hills that offer increasingly clear views of the town's harbor in the distance. You pass through the Torrs Park area, known as the Seven Hills, where the path becomes more formal and zig-zags down toward the sea level. The walk concludes by descending into the historic port of Ilfracombe, where the sight of the harbor and the surrounding coastal architecture marks the transition from the wild clifftops back into a bustling seaside town
