Combe Martin to Watermouth Walk
4.3 miles (7 km)This walk takes you from Combe Martin to Watermouth Bay and Sexton's Burrows on the North Devon Coast.
It's about a 2 mile walk from the Combe Martin beach car park to the scenic bay.
The trail follows an undulating stretch of the North Devon coastline that stays relatively close to the sea. Leaving the long village of Combe Martin behind, the path climbs out of the bay and heads west across the grassy slopes of the cliffs.... This section provides a fantastic vantage point looking back at the towering Great Hangman, allowing you to appreciate the sheer height of the cliffs you have left behind.
As you move further along the trail, the landscape feels increasingly intimate as the path ducks in and out of small wooded areas and skirts the edges of hidden fields. The terrain consists of several short, sharp rises and falls as it navigates the jagged teeth of the coastline. You will eventually reach the cliff edge overlooking Broaddown and Widmouth Bay, where the turquoise waters and rocky inlets start to reveal the unique geology of this area.
The final approach into Watermouth takes you past the dramatic entrance to Watermouth Cove, a natural harbor sheltered by a long rocky arm known as The Ridge. The path descends toward the water, offering views of the many boats moored in the calm, protected basin. The walk also passes the impressive Victorian gothic architecture of Watermouth Castle, which sits overlooking the harbor and the sea, marking a picturesque conclusion to this shorter coastal trek.
