Portsmouth Millennium Circular Walk
2.5 miles (4.1 km)The Portsmouth Millennium Walk is a scenic coastal route that showcases the city’s rich maritime heritage and dramatic waterfront. Starting at Portsmouth Harbour, the trail immediately immerses you in the historic atmosphere of the Old Portsmouth area....
You follow the Millennium Promenade, identifiable by the distinctive "links" motifs set into the pavement, which guides you past the defensive fortifications of the Round Tower. This 15th-century bastion offers commanding views over the Solent and the constant activity of the harbour entrance, where naval vessels and ferries pass just metres from the shore.
The path continues beside the beach, where the sea air and shingle shoreline provide a sense of openness. Joining the Southsea Esplanade, the route leads you past the impressive Southsea Castle, famously built by Henry VIII. From here, the trail makes a wide loop around Southsea Common, a sprawling green space that has served as a military parade ground and a recreational hub for centuries. The area is a haven for local birdlife, and you may spot brent geese grazing on the grass during the winter months, while the mature holm oaks provide shelter for garden birds and squirrels.
As you head back toward the harbour, the route passes the Nelson Monument, a significant landmark dedicated to Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson. This stretch of the walk offers a more reflective tone, passing through the historic streets of Old Portsmouth with its traditional pubs and cobbled lanes. The final leg brings you back to the bustling harbour front, where the modern silhouette of the Spinnaker Tower stands in stark contrast to the ancient stone walls you explored earlier. The blend of sea views, historic fortifications, and open parkland makes this a quintessential Portsmouth experience.
