Shireoaks Canal Walk

This walk takes you along a lovely section of the Chesterfield Canal from Shireoaks to Kiveton Park. The route starts from the train station at Shireoaks and heads west along the towpath for just over 3 miles, passing Hawks Wood before finishing at Kiveton Park train station.
The peaceful stretch of the Chesterfield Canal passes through attractive Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire countryside, following one of Britain's earliest broad canals.... Opened in 1777, the canal was built to transport coal, limestone and agricultural produce between Chesterfield and the River Trent, and today much of the restored towpath provides an excellent route for walking, cycling and wildlife watching.
Leaving Shireoaks, the canal winds through a tranquil landscape of woodland, meadows and open farmland. Hawks Wood forms one of the scenic highlights of the walk, with mature oak and mixed woodland providing habitat for woodland birds, butterflies and other wildlife. The calm waters of the canal are home to ducks, swans, moorhens and occasional kingfishers, while colourful narrowboats add to the character of the waterway.
The walk finishes at Kiveton Park, a village with strong links to the area's coal mining heritage. Nearby Kiveton Park and Wales railway station provides convenient public transport connections, making this an ideal linear walk. Those wishing to explore further can continue west along the Chesterfield Canal towards Norwood Tunnel and Chesterfield or head east towards Worksop and Retford.
The route also uses part of the long distance Cuckoo Way which you can use to continue your walking around Worksop.
