Westward Ho to Bucks Mills Walk

7 miles (11.3 km)

This walk follows a section of the South West Coast Path from Westward Ho to Bucks Mills. It's about a 7 mile walk following the waymarked path south west to Cockington Cliff and Peppercombe before arriving at Bucks Mills.
Leaving Westward Ho!, the route follows one of the most unspoilt stretches of the North Devon coast, traversing high cliffs with extensive views across Bideford Bay and the Bristol Channel.... The path passes through the North Devon Coast National Landscape, where coastal grassland, gorse and heath cloak the cliff tops and provide habitat for butterflies and a variety of seabirds. Information on this protected landscape can be found on the North Devon National Landscape website.
The walk continues past the dramatic cliffs of Greencliff and into the secluded Peppercombe Valley, where mixed woodland descends to a pebble beach backed by striking red sandstone cliffs. Above the valley stands Peppercombe's Victorian folly tower, a reminder of the area's historic estate landscape and one of the distinctive landmarks on this section of coast.
Beyond Peppercombe, the scenery becomes increasingly remote as the path crosses a series of steep-sided wooded combes and stream valleys before reaching Bucks Mills. The village is a small former fishing and lime-burning settlement tucked into a narrow valley at the edge of the sea. Whitewashed cottages cluster around the stream and beach, giving the hamlet a secluded and timeless character. The rocky shore and surrounding cliffs are also part of the National Trust's Hartland coast, an area renowned for its rugged scenery and rich coastal wildlife.
The combination of dramatic cliff-top walking, hidden wooded valleys and the picturesque setting of Bucks Mills makes this one of the most rewarding sections of the South West Coast Path in North Devon.
