Worksop to Retford Canal Walk

This walk follows a fine section of the Chesterfield Canal from Worksop to Retford. The route starts in Worksop next to Sandhills Lake and heads east along the towpath for 11 miles, passing Ranby on the way.
This peaceful waterside walk follows one of the most attractive restored sections of the Chesterfield Canal through the Nottinghamshire countryside.... Opened in 1777, the canal was built to transport coal, limestone and agricultural goods between Chesterfield and the River Trent, and today much of the waterway has been carefully restored for walkers, cyclists and boaters.
Leaving Worksop, the canal passes through a tranquil landscape of woodland, meadows and open farmland, with traditional brick bridges and historic canal features adding to the character of the route. Around Ranby the towpath is particularly peaceful, with frequent opportunities to spot swans, herons, kingfishers, ducks and dragonflies along the water's edge.
The walk finishes in Retford, a historic Nottinghamshire market town with an attractive town centre, independent shops, cafés and several notable Georgian buildings. The nearby canal basin and riverside areas provide a pleasant place to relax after completing the walk.
