Morecambe and Lancaster Greenway Cycle Path
The Morecambe to Lancaster cycle route is a popular, mostly traffic-free path that follows a section of National Cycle Route 69.
It runs for around 4 miles and offers a flat, accessible route suitable for all abilities. Starting in Morecambe, the route often begins near the promenade where cyclists can enjoy sea views across Morecambe Bay before heading inland. It then follows a disused railway line known as the Lancaster Greenway or the old Midland Railway route, providing a smooth tarmac surface away from traffic.
As the path approaches Lancaster, it crosses the River Lune via the Millennium Bridge, a distinctive modern foot and cycle bridge that leads directly into the city centre. From there, riders can explore Lancaster’s historic streets, the castle, and the canal towpath. The route is part of a wider network and connects easily with the Lune Valley path, making it a good starting point for longer rides into the surrounding countryside.
The ride is particularly well-used by commuters, leisure cyclists, and families thanks to its convenience and safety. Signposting is clear throughout, and there are cafes, benches, and picnic spots along the way.
