Dales High Way

90 miles (145 km)

This long distance waymarked walk runs for about 90 miles across the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales.
The trail runs from Saltaire to Appleby-in-Westmorland, passing a series of delightful villages, expansive moors and challenging hill climbs.
Starting in Saltaire the route first heads north across Bingley Moor and Ilkley Moor to Ilkley.
You continue to Addingham and Skipton where you will pass Skipton Castle where there's some fine woodland walks and fascinating history.
The next stage runs into the Yorkshire Dales National Park passing Hetton before a waterside stroll along the pretty Winterburn Reservoir.
Continuing north west you come to a major highlight of the area at Malham. Here you can explore the hugely popular Malham Tarn Estate and visit the photogenic Malham Cove. The route also links up with the epic Pennine Way in this area.
The route heads west from here to Settle where you can pick up part of the Settle Riverside Walk along the Ribble Way. Here you will also pass the splendid Stainforth Force waterfall on the riverside trail.
The route continues north west to another significant highlight at Ingleborough Mountain. One of Yorshire's Three Peaks, the mountain stands at a height of 723 metres (2,372ft) providing wonderful views over the National Park.
After descending the mountain you continue north towards Dentdale where there's more pleasant waterside trails along the River Dee towards Sedbergh.
From here the trail heads north to climb The Calf before following the Bowderdale Beck to Newbiggin On Lune.
The final section continues north towards the splendid limestone pavement at Great Asby Scar before passing Rutter Force waterfall and finishing in Appleby on the River Eden.

Settle - The Golden Lion. This pub in Settle is a good place for a pit stop, serving good food with a sun trap garden to relax in on warmer days. Inside there's a cosy, warming atmosphere and they also provide good quality accommodation if you need to stay over. You can find the 17th century inn on Duke Street at a postcode of BD24 9DU for your sat navs. The inn is also very dog friendly if you have your canine friend with you.
In Malham village head to The Lister Arms. They do excellent home cooked food and have award-winning cask ales as well. The Lister home made pies are of particular note! They also have a lovely garden area to sit out in on warmer days. You can find them in a fine spot, just across from the village green at a postcode of BD23 4DB for your sat navs.
Skipton - The Castle Inn is a good choice here. The old pub dates back to the 19th century when it used to be a coaching inn. They have a good menu and a nice outdoor area for warmer weather. You can find them at 2 Mill Bridge with a postcode of BD23 1NJ for your sat navs.
The Cock and Bottle is another worthy option in the town. The historic former coaching inn dates back to the 18th century and includes a charming old interior with a stone fireplace and wood-beamed ceiling. Outside there's a nice beer garden. You can find them at 30 Swadford St, BD23 1RD. The pub is dog friendly.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas

The route links up with Lady Anne's Way at various points including Skipton and Appleby-in-Westmorland. The 100 mile trail runs from Skipton in Yorkshire to Penrith in Cumbria. It's named after Lady Anne Cliffordwho renovated several of the historic Clifford family buildings you will pass on the waymarked route.
