Derrybawn Woodland Trail

4.8 miles (7.7 km)

Open Streetmap A walk through Derrybawn Wood in the Glendalough valley offers a beautiful and tranquil experience, providing a different perspective of this famous area away from the main tourist paths. The trails here are less crowded, allowing for a more immersive experience in the ancient woodland.
The walk starts from the Upper Lake car park and follows a network of paths that wind their way through a stunning mix of native oak and birch trees, with an understory of lush holly and fern. It's a peaceful route with a gentle incline, taking you along the northern slopes of Derrybawn Mountain. As you ascend, you'll be treated to lovely views of the Upper Lake below. The opening section also takes you past the picturesque Poulanass Waterfall, a real highlight on the route.
This forest is also a fantastic place for wildlife spotting. The ancient trees provide a perfect habitat for a variety of woodland birds, including the great spotted woodpecker and treecreeper. In the spring and early summer, the air is filled with birdsong. Keep an eye out for glimpses of small mammals like squirrels and stoats.
The dense canopy and rich undergrowth also create a perfect environment for insects, so you might spot a variety of butterflies and moths in the warmer months. The walk offers a wonderful sense of isolation and a chance to truly connect with the natural beauty of Glendalough. You can extend your walk by picking up the circular Glendalough Lake Walk.
