Open Streetmap This walk takes you along a section of the Royal Canal from Maynooth to Kilcock in County Kildare.
The attractive town is located a short drive to the west of Dublin. The route starts in Maynooth where you can see the university and the ruins of the historic castle. From here you head west to Kilcock, passing pretty locks, old stone bridges and Branganstown on the way. From the trail you can also enjoy some fine views over the surrounding countryside. You can extend the walk to Enfield if you have time.

The historic Trim Castle is located nearby. There are some fascinating ruins and pleasant views of the River Boyne here.

Maynooth Castle. The castle was built before the middle of the thirteenth century and was the home of the Fitzgerald family from 1176 until the rebellion of Silken Thomas, the son of the ninth Earl of Kildare. Today the partly-ruined building remains as a tourist attraction, with limited access possible. The Castle is situated at the entrance to the South Campus of NUI Maynooth.
