Witchford Walks

This small rural village is located just west of Ely in Cambridgeshire.
The settlement includes a decent local pub and a noteworthy 14th century church which is Grade II listed.
This circular walk from the village takes you through the countryside to visit the neighbouring villages of Witcham and Coveney. The route passes through the Fens along a series of 'Droves' or tracks.

Straight Drove. The many tracks and unmade roads in the Fens are known as 'droves'. Some droves and drainage ditches wind along the natural contours of the landscape, while others strike across it in straight lines drawn by civil engineers through the ages.

Coveney sign, village pound and lock-up. The village pound and lock-up have been restored recently. This is a combined facility to restrain both two- and four-legged strays, and was built around 1850. The lock-up door is offset to accommodate a bench for the inmate; the tiled roof conceals a robust brick arch to prevent escapes.
