Sandown to Bembridge Coastal Walk
5.4 miles (8.7 km)This walk follows the Isle of Wight Coast Path from Sandown to Bembridge on the eastern side of the island. The route runs for about 5.4 miles passing Bembridge Fort and Culver Down before arriving on the sea front in Bembridge.
The trail starts along the flat promenade of Sandown Bay before climbing steeply up onto the chalk ridge of Culver Down, which stands 341 feet (104 metres) above sea level.... This high vantage point offers panoramic views extending back across Sandown Bay and northwards towards the Solent. At the summit, the route passes the historic 19th-century Bembridge Fort and the Yarborough Monument. The path then descends along unpaved clifftop tracks and coastal paths, leading down to the rocky shoreline of Bembridge Ledge and finishing on the harbour seafront.
The diverse environments of high chalk downland and intertidal rock platforms support a range of specialised wildlife. The open maritime grasslands around Culver Down provide hunting territory for birds of prey such as peregrine falcons and kestrels, whilst the steep cliff faces serve as nesting sites for fulmars. Below, the extensive rock pools and flint reefs at Bembridge Ledge are exposed at low tide, revealing a habitat rich in marine life, including various species of crabs, anemones, and foraging wading birds like turnstones.
