Penarth to Sully Coastal Walk
This walk takes you along a section of the Wales Coast Path from Penarth to Sully Island. It runs for about 4 miles along the well signposted path with excellent views throughout.
Starting in Penarth, you can begin near the iconic Penarth Pier, a Victorian structure with a pavilion offering lovely views. The path often follows the Esplanade, passing Penarth Head, a prominent headland with historical significance and great views over the Bristol Channel.
Continuing east, the route heads south towards Lavernock Point, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with interesting geological formations and potential for birdwatching. You might pass the remains of Lavernock Battery, a former military installation.
From Lavernock, the path descends towards St Mary's Well Bay and Swanbridge. At Swanbridge, at low tide, a causeway is revealed, allowing access to Sully Island. This tidal island has a history of smugglers and offers a unique experience to explore its rocky shores and perhaps spot some wildlife. Be sure to check tide times before attempting to cross.
The walk offers a mix of paved promenades, coastal paths, and potentially some rocky sections, especially around Sully Island. You'll enjoy views of the Bristol Channel, the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm in the distance, and the surrounding coastline. Public transport options are available in Penarth and Sully.
