Wicklow Gap to Tonelagee Walk
A walk from Wicklow Gap to the summit of Tonelagee is a popular and relatively short hike in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. The walk is a direct ascent from the car park, making it a great option for a less-strenuous mountain climb.
The trail begins at the Wicklow Gap car park and you'll immediately start a steady climb northeast. The path is a straightforward route up the grassy and boggy slopes, which can be wet and soft underfoot, especially after rain. As you ascend, the views behind you of the rugged Wicklow Gap and the surrounding mountains become increasingly impressive.
After a climb of just under two kilometres, the ground levels out as you reach the wide, flat summit of Tonelagee. From here, you're treated to spectacular panoramic views. To the west, the mountains of the central Wicklow range stretch out, and to the east, you can look down into the famous Glendalough valley and its two lakes. A notable feature on the summit is the heart-shaped Lough Ouler, which sits in the mountain's northeast corrie, a perfect photo opportunity from above.
