Brighouse to Elland Canal Walk
Begin your walk at the Brighouse Basin, where the Calder and Hebble Canal meets the town centre. From here, follow the towpath eastward, passing neatly trimmed grassy banks and moored narrowboats that hint at the canal’s working heritage. The path is level and surfaced, making for an easy start as you leave behind the bustle of Brighouse and head into quieter waterside surroundings.
About a mile in you’ll come across the old Brighouse Weir, where the canal runs alongside the weir pool and the adjacent River Calder. Pause here to enjoy the view of the rushing water spilling over the stone crest and watch barges negotiate the nearby lock. The towpath continues past brick-built retaining walls and former mill buildings, reminders of the area’s Victorian textile industry, with the river valley opening out to reveal wooded slopes on the far bank.
As you approach Elland, the canal meanders gently under low stone bridges before reaching Elland Town Lock. Nearby, you can explore the historic sandstone Elland Bridge or call into a local café for refreshments. At just under three miles, this section of the Calder and Hebble Canal provides a perfect blend of industrial heritage, riverside views, and peaceful towpath walking.
