Cape Cod Canal Bikeway Trail

7.1 miles (11.4 km)

Open Streetmap This walk or cycle takes you along the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway Trail in Massachusetts. Starting from the Buzzards Bay Recreation Area at the foot of the historic railroad bridge, you join the wide, flat paved service road.
This trail runs along the north side of the canal, offering close-up views of vessels including tugs, barges, and sailboats moving through the waterway.
Heading east, the path remains smooth and level, suitable for both walking and cycling. Along the route, you pass several recreation areas including Herring Run, Bourne, and Tidal Flats. These offer amenities such as parking, restrooms during warmer months, picnic tables, and opportunities for saltwater fishing or simply watching the boat traffic.
Wildlife is often visible along the way, with gulls and ospreys overhead and fish in the clear canal waters. The path is lined with open views, fresh sea air, and the sound of distant engines from passing ships.
The trail continues for approximately 7 miles along the north side toward Cape Cod Bay. It is accessible from dawn to dusk, dog-friendly, and allows for flexible use—whether for a short outing or a longer ride or walk across the full stretch.
