You'll follow the easy waterside path west for a distance of 14.6 miles through the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park to the wonderful Potomac Great Falls. The park was established in 1961 as a National Monument by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to preserve the neglected remains of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and many of its original structures.
Along the way you'll enjoy some fine views of the Potomac River. At the end of the route you will come to the Potomac Great Falls where there are a series of rapids and waterfalls located on the border of Montgomery County, Maryland. The Great Falls area is popular for outdoor activities such as kayaking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and hiking.
