Clare Glens Forest Loop Walk
This circular walk explores the lovely woodland area of Clare Glens on the border of County Limerick and County Tipperary.
It's a fine area for a walk with views of the Clare River, pretty streams and fine countryside to enjoy.
The route follows well-marked trails through mixed woodland, where oak, ash and hazel grow alongside conifers, giving shelter to a variety of birds and smaller wildlife. In spring and summer, the ground is brightened by wildflowers, while autumn brings a rich display of colour through the trees. The Clare River flows through the glen in a series of small waterfalls and rapids, cutting through the red sandstone and adding to the scenic charm of the valley.
Paths run close to the water at times before climbing gently into the surrounding woodland, offering a mix of riverside views and shaded forest walking. Several footbridges cross the streams, making it easy to explore both sides of the river and enjoy different perspectives of the cascades. The sound of rushing water is a constant presence, giving the glen a peaceful but lively atmosphere.
The circular nature of the walk makes it accessible and convenient, with no need to retrace steps. It is a popular spot with locals and visitors alike, especially for dog walkers and families, thanks to its manageable distance and well-maintained paths. The combination of woodland, river scenery and quiet countryside makes Clare Glens a rewarding place to explore at any time of year.
You can continue your walking in the area by south to visit Glenstal Abbey or heading north east to climb Keeper Hill for some fine views.
