Diamond Hill Loop Walk

6.4 miles (10.3 km)

Open Streetmap The Diamond Hill Loop Walk in Connemara National Park begins at the visitor centre near Letterfrack and offers a well-maintained route through the heart of the Connemara landscape. The trail starts with a lower loop across gravel paths and boardwalks that pass through heather-covered bogland and gentle slopes. This section provides wide views of the surrounding hills, coastline, and offshore islands.
The path then climbs gradually towards the summit of Diamond Hill via a stone-paved upper loop. As the trail rises, the terrain becomes rockier and more exposed, with a clearly defined ridge leading up to the peak. The summit offers panoramic views in all directions, including the Twelve Bens mountain range to the north, Kylemore Abbey nestled in the valley below, and the Atlantic Ocean stretching out to the west.
The return route descends along the same ridge before rejoining the lower loop, completing a full circuit back to the visitor centre. The trail is clearly waymarked and includes wooden boardwalks over boggy ground, stone steps on steeper sections, and gravel paths throughout.
Weather on the upper parts of the trail can be changeable and windy, so sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing are recommended. The route is popular with walkers of all ages and offers a mix of gentle lowland walking and more rugged hill terrain, making it one of the most accessible mountain walks in the region.
