Fairy Caves Oswaldtwistle Walk

2.1 miles (3.3 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This circular canal walk visits the Fairy Caves in Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire.
The caves are actually a battery of coke ovens that are part of Lancashire’s industrial past.
The walk starts at the Thorn Inn on the western side of Accrington. From here you can pick up footpaths heading north west through the countryside to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The towpath can then be followed to the Fairy Caves before looping back round to the start/finish point.
The coke ovens site is accessible from the canal towpath. Visitors can pause to explore features such as the coke ovens, the dock basin, and remnants of old mine workings and engine beds. One of the ovens is large enough to step inside. These ovens were used to turn coal from the nearby Aspen Colliery into coke, a smokeless fuel used in steel production.
Back in Accrington you can enjoy some refreshment at the Thorn Inn in Church Kirk.
