Farmington Canal Heritage Trail

7 miles (11.3 km)

Open Streetmap This fairly easy cycle or walk follows the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail in Connecticut. Begin on Meadow Road in Farmington, where a wide, paved path follows the Farmington River’s southern bank. The surface is smooth asphalt with gentle curves, making it easy for both walkers and cyclists. You’ll pass under shade trees and alongside the river, with occasional river access points for fishing or resting.
After roughly two miles you reach Quirk Park, where the trail crosses the Farmington River via a low, sturdy bridge. The park offers restrooms, picnic tables, and riverfront lawns, making it a convenient mid-route stop. From here the path continues north, leaving the riverbank and threading through open fields and tree-lined corridors.
Beyond Quirk Park the trail passes the edge of the Winding Trails Recreation Area in Plainville, recognizable by its wooded loop trails and small pond glimpsed through the trees. The towpath remains flat and straight, running along a paved tree lined path. This 7-mile stretch is uniformly level and fully paved, ideal for an out-and-back walk or bike ride without any steep grades or obstacles.
