11.9 miles (19.2 km)

Open Streetmap Start your ride or walk at the Grand Canal Path under the bridge at North Black Canyon Highway, where a paved towpath runs alongside the canal and offers clear waymarking eastward. From this point the route is flat and wide, ideal for both walkers and cyclists, with a smooth asphalt surface and regular mileposts guiding your progress.
Shortly after setting off you pass beneath highway overpasses and enter the urban greenway, where mature palm trees and desert landscaping line the canal banks. About 4 km in you reach Steele Indian School Park, a 118-acre former school site reborn as a vibrant public space with sports courts, lakes and picnic areas. The canal path skirts the park’s northern edge, offering a chance to pause by the artificial lakes or grab a coffee at one of the park’s cafés.
Continuing east, you follow the canal past the Heard Museum’s S’edav Va’aki (Heard Museum) branch, dedicated to Native American art and culture. The museum’s striking red façade and outdoor sculptures are visible from the path, making this a culturally enriching stop if you wish to explore exhibits before resuming your journey.
Beyond the museum, the towpath remains straight and parallel to major city streets, passing residential neighbourhoods and occasional public art installations. After roughly 18 km you approach Tempe Town Lake North Beach, where the canal merges into the lake’s inlet. This is an excellent finishing point: you can relax on the sandy beach, rent a kayak, or continue your exploration around Tempe Town Lake’s recreational loop. The full route covers about 19 km and combines urban charm, parkland serenity and cultural landmarks in one accessible corridor.
