Graves Of The Leinster Men and Tountinna Walk

3.5 miles (5.7 km)

Open Streetmap This trail climbs Tountinna (459m), the highest peak in the Arra Mountains.
The walk begins at the Graves of Leinstermen, a standing stone and burial site dating to 1500 BC. The initial section follows a narrow country road, offering views of Lough Derg, so take care with traffic. The route then turns sharply, giving views of the rolling Tipperary countryside and the Silvermines Mountains.
You'll continue on a tarred road to the summit. From here, you can see the artificial lake created for the Ardnacrusha Hydroelectric Power Station and the Parteen Weir Dam in the distance. The trail also passes the Lough Derg Way, a 69km linear walking route.
Finally, at the summit, take time to enjoy the wonderful views of nearby Lough Derg before following the winding path back to the start.
You continue your walking in the area on the Millennium Cross Walk.

Graves of the Leinstermen

Graves of the Leinstermen. This ancient archaeological site is located at the base of Tountinna mountain in County Tipperary. The site consists of a standing stone and a burial cairn. The standing stone dates back to the Bronze Age, around 1500 BC. When it was excavated in the 19th century, human remains and rusted iron weapons were found. The name "Graves of the Leinstermen" comes from a local legend that a group of Leinster warriors were buried there after a battle with High King Brian Boru's army around 1000 AD.
