Indianapolis Canal Walk
The Indianapolis Canal Walk is a paved loop running through the heart of downtown and White River State Park. Suitable for both walking and cycling, it offers a flat, well-maintained path beneath street level, away from traffic. The route forms part of the city’s wider Cultural Trail network and is accessible year-round, including in winter when it’s cleared of snow.
The trail follows the Central Canal, with leafy surroundings, benches, fountains, and quiet water views. Public art and murals appear throughout, with occasional glimpses of ducks, turtles and the city skyline. The northern end of the loop features a striking water feature and landscaped planting, offering a scenic break in the route.
Several major attractions sit directly along the path. The Indiana State Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, NCAA Hall of Champions, and the US Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial are all visible from the trail and add cultural interest. The canal also passes smaller green spaces, playgrounds and public installations, making it varied and appealing.
Bike-share stations and other city trail links make it easy to access. The surface is wide, smooth, and clearly marked, making it well suited for families, casual riders, or walkers looking for a calm, accessible route through downtown. The entire loop blends parkland, waterside scenery and city landmarks into one relaxing urban circuit.
