Coast to Coast Keld to Reeth Walk
This walk follows a section of the Coast to Coast Walk from Keld to Reeth in North Yorkshire.
The route runs for a distance of just over 10 miles on local waymarked trails. It follows part of the iconic Coast to Coast Walk, offers a truly immersive journey through the rugged and historically rich landscape of Swaledale in North Yorkshire. This section, often considered one of the highlights of the long-distance trail, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and the stark, fascinating remnants of the area's lead mining past.
Setting off from Keld, a tranquil hamlet steeped in walking heritage where both the Coast to Coast and Pennine Way intersect, the path quickly guides you eastwards. One of the first natural marvels you'll encounter is the impressive Kisdon Force waterfall, a series of powerful cascades on the River Swale that tumble through a deep, wooded gorge. The thundering water provides a dramatic contrast to the peaceful upstream sections of the river. The trail continues to shadow the river, often offering picturesque views across the valley, before ascending into the heart of the former mining district.
As you progress, the landscape transforms, becoming more open and revealing the significant industrial archaeology of Gunnerside Gill. Here, the scars of centuries of lead mining are evident, with numerous ruined engine houses, smelt mills, and spoil heaps dotting the moorland. You'll pass through areas like the Old Gang Smelting Mill, a remarkably preserved complex that stands as a stark reminder of the arduous work that once defined this region. The path often follows old miners' tracks, including sections along Mill Gill, leading you through this lunar-like terrain before eventually descending towards the vibrant village of Reeth, where the welcoming village green and local pubs offer a well-deserved respite.
