Lehigh Canal Towpath - Bethlehem - Freemansburg Walk or Cycle
This walk follows the Lehigh Canal Towpath from Freemansburg to Bethlehem and Glendon in Pennsylvania.
The route runs along the Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Trail along a flat, well-graded crushed-stone towpath beside the Lehigh River. The route is open to walkers and cyclists and stays level throughout, offering uninterrupted waterside views.
Shortly after leaving Bethlehem you’ll glimpse the skeletal stacks and redevelopment of the historic Bethlehem Steel site across the river. About halfway along, you pass Charlie Brown’s Clearing—an open picnic area shaded by mature trees—where the remains of Lock 43 stand beside benches overlooking the canal prism.
Continuing east, the towpath threads past river marshes and riparian woods until you reach Freemansburg. Here the trail skirts the restored 1829 mule barn, now home to the Freemansburg Canal Education Center, where exhibits recount life on the original canal.
The route then continues east past Mount Hope to finish in Glendon at Riverview Park.
