Letchworth Greenway
This circular walk follows the Letchworth Greenway around the Hertfordshire town of Letchworth.
The waymarked trail runs for 12.7 miles with much of the route also suitable for cyclists. You can start anywhere but this route begins at the car park at Norton Bury.
Designed to reflect the original principles of the garden city movement, the Greenway forms a continuous, signposted path through a mix of farmland, woodland, and open green spaces. It is maintained to provide public access to the countryside and to help protect the town's rural surroundings from development.
The route follows mostly off-road tracks and footpaths, some surfaced and others grass or compacted soil, making it suitable for walkers and cyclists for most of the year, though conditions may vary in wet weather. It passes a variety of features including arable fields, hedgerows, tree-lined corridors, and areas of ecological interest, supporting birds, butterflies, and wildflowers. There are also views of the surrounding countryside and occasional benches or resting points.
Access points to the Greenway are found around the edge of Letchworth, allowing people to join from residential areas, parks, or linked footpaths. Waymarkers and information boards help guide users around the route, which is used for leisure, dog walking, commuting by bike, and organised events such as charity walks and runs.
The Greenway provides a protected, scenic loop that connects the town with the surrounding countryside, encouraging outdoor activity while preserving the garden city's historic green buffer.
