Lock 31 Canal Walk Hawley Pennsylvania
This easy waterside walk takes you along the Lackawaxen River near Hawley in Pennsylvania.
The Lock 31 Canal Walk begins at the D&H Canal Park at Lock 31 on Route 6 in Hawley. You follow the historic towpath built in the 1820s alongside the tea-coloured waters of the old Delaware & Hudson Canal, with the Lackawaxen River visible just to the right. The crushed-stone path is level and well-maintained, making it easy for both walkers and cyclists. Along the route you’ll pass the stone ruins of Lock 31 and interpretive plaques that explain the canal’s role in transporting coal and goods across Pennsylvania.
Shortly beyond the lock remains you reach the restored Daniels Farmhouse, a post-and-beam building from the 1820s that served canal boats and local residents. The trail then offers open views of the river and surrounding woodlands, where you may spot herons on the bank or turtles basking on logs. The loop turns back near a small riverside picnic area before returning to the park, covering roughly 1.5 miles in total and blending industrial heritage with tranquil riverside scenery.
