Milford On Sea to Hurst Castle Walk
This walk takes you from Milford On Sea to Hurst Castle on the Hampshire coast.
You can reach the castle from the sea front car park by following the Solent Way east for about 2 miles. It's a nice flat path with splendid views over the water to the nearby Isle of Wight.
This striking coastal artillery fort was built by Henry VIII between 1541 and 1544. It was a key part of his "Device Forts" programme, designed to protect England's coast from invasion by France and the Holy Roman Empire, specifically defending the western entrance to the Solent waterway.
Now owned by English Heritage, you can explore the castle for a reasonable fee. Inside, interesting exhibitions help you piece together Hurst Castle's extensive history. A major highlight is the spectacular views from the roof of the Tudor keep, looking out across The Needles Passage towards the Isle of Wight. The keep itself is also historically significant as the probable place where Charles I was held prisoner in 1648.
