Runcorn Canal Walk
This walk follows a section of the Bridgewater Canal Way from Runcorn to Preston Brook.
Start your walk near Waterloo Bridge in Runcorn at the point where the Bridgewater Canal meets the River Mersey. From here, follow the towpath eastwards along the tranquil Bridgewater Canal. This mostly flat, easy path takes you through a blend of industrial heritage and green spaces, perfect for a gentle riverside stroll.
Shortly after setting off, you’ll pass Phoenix Park Lake, a peaceful spot known for its open water and wildlife. It’s an ideal place to pause and enjoy some quiet before continuing along the canal. The path remains close to the water, with views of moored boats and occasional glimpses of historic canal infrastructure.
As you proceed, the surroundings become increasingly rural, moving away from the town’s edges. The canal towpath guides you steadily toward Preston Brook, where the walk concludes around the marina.
This route covers just under five miles and offers a lovely mix of waterside scenery, nature, and a touch of local history.
The flat terrain and mostly traffic-free path make this walk suitable for all ages and fitness levels, whether you’re out for some fresh air, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the peaceful canal environment.
