Sandymount Beach Walk
A walk along Sandymount Strand in Dublin offers a refreshing coastal experience with fantastic views, a diverse ecosystem, and some interesting landmarks. Unlike a traditional sandy beach, the strand is a vast expanse of tidal flats that can stretch for over a kilometre at low tide, providing a unique and expansive landscape for walkers.
The walk provides uninterrupted panoramic views across Dublin Bay. To the north, you'll see the iconic silhouette of the Poolbeg Lighthouse , its distinctive red and white stripe standing out against the water. Behind it, the two towering red and white chimneys of the Poolbeg Generating Station are a familiar part of the Dublin skyline. Looking across the bay, you can see Howth Head in the distance, and on a clear day, the peaks of the Dublin Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to the city itself.
To continue your walking head north to explore the Bull Island Nature Reserve.

The area is a haven for wildlife, particularly birds. At low tide, the mudflats become a feeding ground for thousands of wading birds and wildfowl. You can spot a variety of species, including curlews, sandpipers, oystercatchers, and brent geese, which migrate here in large numbers for the winter. The vast open space makes it a great spot for birdwatching, and the sounds of the birds fill the air. The strand's proximity to the city makes this rich biodiversity even more remarkable.
In addition to the natural beauty, the walk has points of interest along the way. Near the promenade, there are public art installations and monuments. The walk itself is often busy with local residents, dog walkers, and joggers enjoying the fresh sea air. The contrast of the wild, open strand with the nearby Victorian-era architecture of Sandymount village adds to the charm of the area, making it a perfect urban escape.
