Schuylkill Canal and River Walk or Cycle
This walk or cycle takes you along the Schuylkill River in Pennsylvania.
The route runs from Betzwood to Port Providence and Mont Clare. It's a flat, easy paved path with some fine views of the river and surrounding landscape.
On the way you can look out for flora and fauna including pretty wildflowers and deer.
The walk begins at the Betzwood Trailhead in Valley Forge National Historical Park, where there are facilities such as parking, restrooms, drinking water, and picnic areas. From here, the Schuylkill River Trail runs along the river through wooded parkland. The surface is paved and suitable for walking or cycling. As you continue, the trail passes near remnants of the Schuylkill Canal, which runs alongside the river in several sections.
Approaching Port Providence, the canal becomes more visible. The Port Providence Trailhead offers further amenities including parking, water, toilets, and a nearby dog park. A restaurant next to the canal also provides kayak rentals, making this a spot for both walkers and paddlers. From here, the trail follows the Oakes Reach section of the historic Schuylkill Canal, which includes Lock 60 and the restored lock tender’s house. This section is maintained by the Schuylkill Canal Association and includes a floating dock on the canal.
The trail continues into Mont Clare, where the fully restored Lock 60 complex and park area sit between the river and canal. A launch site for boats is also located here. The Mont Clare Bridge (PA-29) features a protected pedestrian and cycling route across the river, maintaining a continuous off-road link between the trail sections and allowing uninterrupted access along both the Schuylkill River and Canal.
