Enjoy a short stroll around this pretty nature reserve in Winchester. In the reserve you will find wetland with chalk stream, reedbeds and grassland.
There are nice boardwalks taking you through the reedbeds and a water vole trail where you can look out for these elusive creatures in the slow moving streams. The area has lots of interesting flora and fauna with fen meadow containing wetland wildflowers such as ragged robin and marsh valerian. Look out for otters and birds including redshank, lapwing, kingfisher and snipe.
If you'd like to extend your walking in Winchester then you could climb to St Catherine's Hill for fine views over the town below, the River Itchen and the surrounding countryside of the South Downs. The Itchen Way passes the site so you can pick this up to continue your walk along the river.

Pubs/Cafes

Head to the Willow Tree for some refreshments after your walk. The bar is an island oasis located at the foot of St Giles hill, opposite the Durngate car park and the Winnall Moors nature reserve. The bar has an open fire and a rustic vibe, with children and dogs welcome. There's also a delightful riverside garden to relax in on fine days. You can find the pub very close to the reserve at 14 Durngate terrace with a postcode of SO238QX for your sat navs.
Also worth considering is the Bishop on the Bridge located right next to the River Itchen to the south of the reserve. It's dog friendly with a good menu and a nice riverside terrace for fine summer days. The classic English pub located at number 1 High Street next to the Winchester Mill.
