Ynys Lochtyn Circular Walk
A walk around Ynys Lochtyn on the Ceredigion coast is one of the most scenic routes in West Wales. Starting from the village of Llangrannog, the trail follows the Ceredigion Coast Path as it climbs steeply out of the village, soon giving fine views back over the sandy beach and the rugged cliffs. The path then continues along dramatic headlands, with the sound of seabirds and waves below adding to the atmosphere.
As you approach Ynys Lochtyn, the narrow promontory comes into view, stretching out into Cardigan Bay. At low tide it is possible to cross the grassy neck of land that links the headland to the mainland, allowing you to explore further and take in sweeping views up and down the coast. On clear days you may see as far as Snowdonia to the north and Pembrokeshire to the south, while dolphins are often spotted in the bay’s waters.
The return route retraces the coastal path, with more opportunities to admire the cliffs, sea stacks and wildflowers that thrive on the exposed slopes. The walk is not long but includes some steep sections, rewarding the effort with a mixture of coastal scenery, wildlife and the distinctive outline of Ynys Lochtyn itself.
