Ballycuggaran Forest and Moylussa Walk

Starting from the Ballycuggaran Forest car park on the shores of Lough Derg near Killaloe, the walk begins on wide forest tracks that rise steadily through tall conifers and mixed woodland. The lower section is sheltered and quiet, with only glimpses of the lake below breaking through the trees. As the path climbs higher, the trees thin and occasional openings give sweeping views across Lough Derg and into Tipperary on the far side.
After roughly three kilometres the route leaves the forest behind, emerging onto more open ground of heath and bog. Here the scenery changes completely, with heather, bilberry and rough grasses underfoot and big skies overhead. The final section follows a narrower path along the ridge, climbing steadily towards the summit of Moylussa. At 532 metres, Moylussa is the highest point in County Clare. The summit is marked by a small cairn and offers wide-ranging views: the full expanse of Lough Derg below, the Slieve Bernagh hills rolling away to the west, and on clear days the Silvermines and Keeper Hill visible across the water in County Tipperary. After enjoying the views, the return follows the same route back down through the open bogland and into the shelter of Ballycuggaran Forest, eventually descending to the lakeshore once more.
