Cahir Castle Walk

This walk visits a large historic castle in the town of Cahir, County Tipperary. The 12th century fortress sits in an unusual location on an island in the river Suir.
You can enjoy a stroll around the castle grounds with views over the river to the town. There's also an excellent audiovisual tour where you can learn all about the castle's fascinating history and wonderful architecture. The photogenic site has been used as a film location on several occasions including Excalibur (1981) and The Tudors (2007).
To continue your walking around Cahir head north to visit the Rock Of Cashel. The fascinating site houses Ireland's most remarkable collection of medieval structures. In Cashel you can also visit the photogenic ruins of Hore Abbey which lies just to the west of the Rock. The town can be reached from Cahir by picking up the Tipperary Heritage Way, a waymarked long distance walk following the course of the River Suir through the county.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas

Head east to Clonmel and you could pick up the Suir Blueway. This shared cycling and walking trail runs along the River Suir between Carrick-on-Suir and Clonmel.
About an hours driver to the south east there's the stunning Comeragh Mountains to explore. Here you can try the popular Coumshingaun Lake Loop Walk or visit the picturesque Mahon Falls. Also in this area there's the Lough Mohra and Rath Beag Loop. The lake is a glacial coum and located in a lovely remote spot with beautiful countryside, forestry and mountains surrounding it.
To the west there's the Galty Mountains where you can enjoy a walk to the secluded Lough Curra, climb to the excellent viewpoint at Galtymore Mountain and try the Lake Muskry Trail.
To the south is the beautiful Bay Lough. The remote Corrie Lake is located at the The Vee in the Knockmealdown Mountain range, a popular local area for hiking.
To the south west you'll find Glengarra Woods where there are two waymarked trails, specimen trees and fine views of the Burncourt River.

Cahir Castle. The castle was so well built it was at one time thought to be impregnable, but it finally fell to the earl of Essex in 1599 when heavy artillery was used against it for the first time. During the Irish Confederate Wars it was besieged twice more.
