Drake Stone and Harbottle Castle Circular Walk

4.5 miles (7.2 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This circular walk visits two of the historic highlights of the Northumberland National Park.
On the way you will pass the Drake Stone and Harbottle Castle while enjoying some wonderful views of the surrounding woods, countryside and hills.
You can start the walk from the car park just west of Harbottle Castle. The  ruined medieval castle is Grade I listed and is located next to the Coquet River. You can climb up to the site and enjoy some fine views over the area.
The route then follows footpaths west to the Drake Stone which sits in an elevated position above the village. There's more great views over the Northumberland hills from this legendary spot.
You then continue past Harbottle Lake before a woodland section through West Wood.
The walk crosses the River Coquet and then follows a riverside path back through the interesting village. Shortly after you return to the castle and the car park.
To continue your walking in the area try the Harbottle Crags and Woods Walk which climbs to Cold Law, Dove Crag and Harbottle Crags.
