Kilronan Castle and Lough Meelagh Walk

2 miles (3.2 km)

Open Streetmap This walk explores the grounds of Kilronan Castle before a stroll along Lough Meelagh near Ballyfarnon in County Roscommon. The castle grounds include a pretty walled garden, peaceful woodland and lakeside trails along the expansive lough.
The route begins at the historic Kilronan Castle, a nineteenth-century Gothic Revival building now restored as a hotel. From here you can wander through the landscaped grounds, where tree-lined avenues lead into quiet woodland and open lawns provide views back to the impressive castle façade. The walled garden adds a touch of colour in the warmer months, with seasonal flowers and carefully tended borders creating a tranquil setting.
Beyond the gardens the path reaches the shores of Lough Meelagh, a broad and attractive lake surrounded by rolling countryside. Lakeside trails follow sections of the shoreline, giving opportunities to spot local birdlife and enjoy views across the calm waters. The woodland edges provide shelter and shade, with a mix of native and planted trees adding variety to the walk. The combination of historic architecture, parkland and natural scenery makes this a particularly enjoyable and accessible route, with the quiet waters of the lough providing a peaceful conclusion to the visit.
