Meadow near Bowden Hill. Bowden Hill is a small, picturesque village in Wiltshire, nestled within the parish of Lacock and offering a tranquil, rural escape. Situated on the side of a hill, it rises from the River Avon flood plain, providing residents and visitors with attractive views across the surrounding mixture of woodlands and agricultural land. Its designation as a conservation area ensures a relatively sparse population density and helps preserve its charming character.
Church of St. Anne, Bowden Hill. Despite its quiet nature, Bowden Hill is home to a few notable landmarks. Among these is St Anne's Church, constructed in 1856 by John Gladstone (brother of Prime Minister William Gladstone), featuring a distinctive blend of Early English Gothic, Norman, and German Romanesque architectural styles. Another significant site is Bowden Park, a grand 18th-century country house designed by James Wyatt, which is Grade I listed. Additionally, a 16th-century conduit house, still supplying water to nearby Lacock Abbey, stands as a testament to the area's long history.
