Uphill to Brean Down Walk
This walk runs from the Uphill Nature Reserve to Brean Down in Somerset. Start your walk from the Uphill Nature Reserve car park, where you can enjoy views over the marina and the surrounding salt marshes.
From here, head south along the River Axe, following the riverside path as it curves gently towards the mouth of the river. This section of the walk offers peaceful views across the estuary, with mudflats and salt marshes providing a rich habitat for wading birds and other wildlife. The path remains easy to follow, staying close to the water’s edge with occasional glimpses back towards the nature reserve and the distant hills.
Continue south until you reach the crossing point over the River Axe. Once across, the route turns north, leading you along the opposite bank of the river. The path follows the coast, offering open views across Weston Bay towards the Bristol Channel. The wide skies and open shoreline give this stretch of the walk a real sense of space. As you head north, Brean Down soon comes into view ahead, its limestone ridge rising steeply from the flat coastal plain.
The walk continues along the seafront until you reach the start of Brean Down itself. From here, follow the path that climbs steadily onto the ridge. The ascent is rewarded with panoramic views across the coast and inland to the Mendip Hills. Continue along the top of Brean Down, passing grassy slopes and low limestone outcrops as you make your way towards Brean Down Fort at the far end. The fort marks the turning point of the walk and is a fine spot to pause and take in the views across the Bristol Channel towards South Wales and along the Somerset coastline.
The route covers just under six miles from the Uphill Nature Reserve car park to the fort at Brean Down, combining riverside walking, coastal scenery, and a historic headland in one rewarding route.
