Carreg Cennen Castle
Enjoy a circular walk around this spectacularly positioned ruined castle in Carmarthenshire. The castle sits on an elevated limestone precipice with fabulous views over the lovely Brecon Beacons countryside. There are a series of good footpaths taking you around the grounds and an invigorating climb up to the castle itself. The castle includes a natural cave which leads deep into the hillside, six towers, a great twin-towered gatehouse and the fascinating King's Chamber dating from the 13th/14th century.
The Brecon Beacons Way also runs past the castle so you can pick this up to continue your walking in the area.
Carreg Cennen Castle is located about four miles south of Llandeilo on the western tip of the Brecon Beacons National Park. To continue your walking in the area head to Llandeilo and visit Dinefwr Park.
Here you'll find a 12th-century castle, a historic house, an 18th-century landscaped park and a medieval deer park.
Our circular walk from Llandeilo visits the castle and the ancient woodland at the Tregeyb Wood nature reserve. Near here there's also Gelli Aur Country Park. The park surrounds the Golden Grove mansion and includes a deer park, peacocks, views of the Tywi Valley and an aboretum with some fine specimen trees.

Dog Walking
The woodland areas surrounding the castle are a great place for a dog walk. Please keep them on leads. Guide dogs only inside the tea rooms and gift shop.
Further Information and Other Local Ideas
The Heart of Wales Line Trail passes through the area. The 143 mile trail explores the Heart of Wales Railway Line, a wonderful rural railway running between Swansea and Shrewsbury. The trail visit several train stations, old railway lines and photogenic railway viaducts. Heading north along the trail takes you into Llandeilo and to another ancient site at Garn Goch, where you will find two Iron Age Hill Forts. Follow the path south west and it will take you to Llandybie and Ammanford where you can enjoy nice trails through the River Amman Valley.

The first castle at Carreg Cennen would probably have been built by the Welsh Prince Rhys Ap Gryffydd in the 12th and 13th century. Though there is some evidence of Prehistoric and Roman occupation on the site.

The main entrance is on the back wall, directly behind the people sitting down in the foreground. Obscured in the shadows in the far southeast corner is a tunnel leading down to a cave under the castle.
