Dingle Lighthouse Walk

5 miles (8 km)

Open Streetmap A walk to Dingle Lighthouse offers a beautiful coastal journey from the town of Dingle, taking you along the coast path for about four kilometres. This straightforward route provides fantastic views and a real sense of the dramatic Dingle Peninsula landscape.
Starting in Dingle, you'll head south along the well-trodden coast path. The path is easy to follow as it hugs the coastline, with the constant sight and sound of the sea to your right. The walk is relatively flat and accessible for most walkers, making it a popular choice for both locals and visitors. As you progress, the bustling town gives way to a more rugged, wilder landscape, with the path winding past green fields and rocky coves.
The walk passes the noteworthy Hussey's Folly before culminating at the lighthouse. It's a simple yet elegant structure that has stood guard over the harbour entrance since the early 19th century. From this vantage point, you're treated to spectacular views back towards Dingle town and its harbour, with the backdrop of the mountains behind it. The open sea stretches out before you, and on a clear day, you can see the distinctive silhouette of the Blasket Islands in the distance. The lighthouse, while not open to the public, is a rewarding destination, and a perfect spot to pause and appreciate the beauty of this wild and iconic part of County Kerry.

Hussey's Folly. This distinctive structure, dating back to 1845, is a poignant historical landmark. It was constructed as a relief project during the devastating Great Famine, providing much-needed employment for the local community in a time of widespread starvation. The tower is named after the local land agent, R.M. Hussey, who commissioned the work.
