GPS Cycle and Walking Routes

Plas Newydd

2 miles (4 km)

This walk takes you through the woodland and gardens surrounding this mansion in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Anglesey. The house is situated on the Menai Strait so there are fabulous views across the water towards Snowdonia. Woodland trails take you to a pretty rhododendron garden, while there is also a spring garden and Australasian arboretum with an an italianate-style summer terrace.
You can also explore the house which was Lord and Lady Anglesey's family home. It contains Rex Whistler's largest ever painting and fine 1930s furniture.
If you would like to continue your walking in the area then you could pick up the Anglesey Coast Path which runs past the house. Penrhyn Castle is also not far away and has 60 acres of beautiful grounds to explore.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas

Just a few miles north east of the site you can visit the town of Menai Bridge. There's some lovely walks along the promenade with views of the famous suspension bridge which crosses the Menai Strait from Anglesey to mainland Wales.
The noteworthy Lon Las Ogwen cycle route starts just to the east of Bangor at Porth Penrhyn. The off road trail will take you south through Snowdonia to the beautiful Llyn Ogwen, passing the fascinating Penrhyn Quarry at Bethesda and the stunning glacial valley of Nant Ffrancon on the way. It runs mostly along old railway paths and the River Ogwen before finishing at the lake and waterfall. The route uses part of Route 5 and is also suitable for walkers.

The house. This National trust property is the home of the Marquess of Anglesey. It was designed by James Wyatt in the 18C, and is a mixture of Classical and Gothic styles. It is famous for its association with the painter Rex Whistler, and his largest work is here - a mural of an imaginary Mediterranean town in which he painted himself as a gardener.
